How I Got My First Software Testing Job

Breaking into the tech industry can feel like a daunting task, especially when you're looking for your first role in Software Testing. In this post, I want to share the journey that led me to my first QA position and provide a roadmap for those just starting out.
The Preparation Phase
Before applying for jobs, I spent several months learning the fundamentals of testing. This included understanding the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), learning how to write effective test cases, and getting familiar with bug tracking tools like Jira.
Building a Portfolio
One of the most critical steps was building a portfolio on GitHub. I included sample test plans, automated scripts using Selenium, and even some documentation for manual testing projects. This gave me something tangible to show recruiters.
Networking and Applying
I focused on LinkedIn to connect with other QA professionals. I also tailored my resume for every application, making sure to highlight the skills mentioned in the job descriptions. Consistency was key!
